Solar Co-op Launch for Hillsborough Residents
Let’s Leap into Solar Together!
Hillsborough County, Fla. – The nonprofit group Solar United Neighbors (SUN) is here to help you go solar by launching the Hillsborough County 2024 Solar Co-op on Leap Day, February 29th. This year’s co-op also partners with the Pinellas County 2024 Solar Co-op to assist residents, businesses, and non-profits across the bay with making the leap into solar ownership.
“The support SUN provides to our community is invaluable to those interested in going solar with navigating through the process from start to finish,” said Janet Lorton, Executive Director for the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPC). “Going solar not only saves you money but also contributes to a cleaner, healthier environment.”
The co-ops are free to join and open to homeowners and business owners from across the bay. Together, SUN will support co-op members with learning about solar energy and leveraging their buying power to purchase individual top-quality solar systems at a reduced price.
After a vendor-neutral competitive bidding process facilitated by SUN, co-op members will select a single solar company to install their co-op solar systems. Joining the co-op is free and members are not obligated to purchase solar. Joining the co-op is a win-win: members gain access to SUN’s solar education and purchase support, while also having the option to individually buy solar systems at the installer’s discounted group rate.

Counties, Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition, Tampa Bay Sierra Club, and The CLEO Institute.
Partnering with the Pinellas Co-op are City of Clearwater, City of Dunedin, City of Largo, City of
Safety Harbor, City of St. Petersburg, City of Tarpon Springs, Suncoast Sierra Club, League of Women
Voters of the St. Petersburg Area, and City of Oldsmar.
“When we found the SUN Co-op, we knew this was how we would finally go solar,” said Marcy and Jason Ryan, members of the 2023 Hillsborough Solar Co-op. “The entire process was smooth and the co-op communication was great. It was like we had experts helping and guiding us along the way. From getting started with SUN, to having our new solar project completed, everything exceeded our expectations."
SUN will host several free information sessions to educate community members about solar energy and the co-op. Individuals interested in going solar can sign up for the co-op or one of the upcoming information sessions at solarunitedneighbors.org/florida.
