Get Money For Mercury During The Month Of December

Any Hillsborough County resident can bring their mercury thermometer or mercury thermostat to a Hillsborough County Household Chemicals and Electronics Collection facility during collection dates in December and receive a little extra grocery money for the holidays.

Hillsborough County and Covanta Hillsborough Inc. are offering a $5 Publix gift card for each mercury thermometer, and a $10 Publix gift card for each mercury thermostat brought to the chemicals and electronics collection sites on these dates only:

  • Dec. 3 - Northwest – 9805 N. Sheldon Road
  • Dec. 10 - South County – Powell Road, off U.S. Highway 41, a quarter-mile north of Big Bend Road
  • Dec. 17 - East County – County Road 579, a quarter-mile north of Interstate 4

The centers are open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Quantities of gift cards are limited. However, even if the card supply is depleted, the sites still provide the best alternative for properly disposing of unwanted mercury thermometers and mercury thermostats. The Household Chemicals and Electronics Collection are for residential waste only; no commercial/business-related waste will be accepted.

For more information, contact the Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department at (813) 272-5977, ext. 43284 or Covanta Hillsborough Inc. at (813) 684-5688, ext. 3011
