IkeaWhat is a Brownfield?

A Brownfield is a property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties increases local tax bases, facilitates job growth, utilizes existing infrastructure, takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land, and both improves and protects the environment.

VarelaThe Environmental Protection Commission was delegated the administration of the Brownfields Program in Hillsborough County, effective June 15, 2004. EPC has participated as an interested party in the Brownfields Program to date and has the expertise and resources to successfully administer the program within Hillsborough County. The FDEP and EPC believe that authorizing the local program to negotiate Site Rehabilitation Agreements and oversee the environmental cleanup of Brownfields will facilitate expansion of the program within the County.
