Coronet Closing |
The Agency was informed for the first time earlier Friday, January 30th, that
Coronet intends to close their Plant City animal feed manufacturing complex
effective March 31, 2004. While this is a significant development, it does not
change our resolve to ensure that all the environmental problems at the facility
are corrected. We will remain the lead Agency on the air issues and continue to
work with the State Department of Environmental Protection to resolve the
outstanding concerns regarding waste and water at the site. The shutdown of the
plant will bring the air sources into compliance some 10 months sooner than agreed
to in our enforcement agreement, and from that perspective that is good news.
EPC
will continue our air, soils and landfill investigations of the area. This
information is being turned over to the State’s Department of Health for
consideration in their health assessment due out in draft later this
spring/summer. Providing this data and seeing these investigations through to
completion, remains a priority for the EPC.

further information on the Agency’s Coronet activities, please call us at

EPC
Evaluates Initial Soil Samples Around Coronet Industries
Tampa, FL -- The Environmental Protection Commission of
Hillsborough County (EPC) has completed an initial evaluation of surface soils in
the vicinity of Coronet Industries. Twenty-two (22) soil samples were taken to
assess the extent of air pollution deposition on the local communities. The
soil was tested for eleven inorganic compounds which include arsenic, cadmium, lead
and boron. All measured concentrations are well below standards for direct
exposure levels in residential areas. This information is being shared with
the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Department of
Health for further assessment.
A press opportunity regarding the
soil sample results has been scheduled for September 8, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the EPC –
1900 9th Avenue, Tampa FL 33605. At this meeting a brief technical report
summarizing the study and its findings will be available.

EPC Adds Air Monitors in Coronet Vicinity

Tampa, FL – The Environmental Protection Commission (EPC)
of Hillsborough County has installed three additional air monitors in the vicinity
of Coronet Junction, specifically to assess the air quality in the area. The three
air monitors commenced operations August 28, 2003 and are in addition to the air
monitoring station operating at Plant City High School since 1998.
The air monitors are approximately 120 degrees apart:
located to the northwest, the northeast, and due south of Coronet Industries. The
air monitors will run for 24-hour periods and collect airborne matter on filters
that will be collected and analyzed by EPC's laboratory. The filters will be
compared to similar monitors already operating in other parts of Hillsborough
County. Results of the air monitoring will be turned over to Department of Health
officials for use in their health assessment in that area.
EPC will have an opportunity for the press to visit one
of the new monitoring sites on Friday, August 29, 2003 at 10:00 AM. The site is
located at Springhead Fire Station, 4503 Coronet Rd., Plant City. EPC staff will
be on-site conducting routine maintenance and will be available for questions
pertaining to the site. Photos may also be taken.
