PRESS RELEASE: 2019 Hillsborough Solar Co-op Info Sessions

Post Date:04/29/2019

Hillsborough County residents form a solar co-op to go

solar together and save money.

Tampa, FL - Neighbors in Hillsborough County, with the help of non-profit Solar United Neighbors, have formed a solar co-op to save money and make going solar easier. The group is seeking participants and will host a series of public information sessions (details below) to educate the community about solar and the co-op process.

Solar United Neighbors expands access to solar by educating Florida residents about the benefits of distributed solar energy, helping them organize group solar installations, and strengthening Florida solar policies and its community of solar supporters.

“It’s time for all of us to use our own natural resource, the sun, to power our way into the future,” shared Pat Kemp, Hillsborough County Commissioner.

According to Dr. Idelia Philips, President, League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County, “the League is thrilled to launch our third solar co-op and help create a brighter future for Hillsborough. Solar energy helps make our communities resilient, saves consumers money, supports energy conservation, and reduces the use of fossil fuels and their contribution to climate change.”

Co-op participants will select a single company to install the solar systems and will then have the option to purchase panels individually based on the installer’s group rate. By going solar as a group and choosing a single installer, participants can save on cost and have the support of fellow group participants and solar experts at Solar United Neighbors.

“We now look forward to getting our TECO bill every month—to see how much we’re saving!” remarked Tracy Fass, a 2017 Hillsborough Solar Co-op homeowner.

Hillsborough County homeowners interested in joining the Solar Co-op can sign up at: The Co-op is free to join, with no obligation or commitment to purchase a solar system. Once the group is large enough, Solar United Neighbors will help the Co-op solicit competitive bids from area solar installers.

Our Hillsborough County partners include: Hillsborough County, Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County, League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County, Physicians for Social Responsibility - Florida, Sierra Club Tampa Bay Group, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Solar Energy Loan Fund, and Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council.

Solar United Neighbors supports solar co-ops across the country. These co-ops are a part of the organization’s mission to create a new energy system with rooftop solar as the cornerstone. Solar United Neighbors holds events and education programs to help people become informed solar consumers, maximize the value of their solar investment and advocate for fair solar policies. Those interested in supporting the organization’s work and becoming a member can do so at the Solar United Neighbors website.
